As part of a joint project with the Central State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents (CSAFPSD KR, which is part of the Archive Service of the KR), the AKIpress publication presents a series of archival photographs titled "It Was Recently, It Was Long Ago."

One of the photos captures the Uyghur dance "Usul," which was filmed in 1934, making it 92 years old.

Reference:

The Uyghur dance "Usul" (or "Dap usuli") is a classical form of Uyghur dance art with deep historical roots. Dap (doyra) is one of the oldest musical instruments of the Uyghurs, and the dance with it occupies a prominent place in the cultural tradition of this people.

Uyghurs in Kyrgyzstan in the 1930s

By the early 1930s, descendants of the first wave of migrants from Kashgar and nearby areas of Xinjiang (late 19th - early 20th century) had already settled in Kyrgyzstan, particularly in the Fergana Valley and Chui region, engaging in agriculture and crafts.

The difficult situation of the Uyghur people in the 1930s was caused by the general upheavals in the region: uprisings and the brief proclamation of the East Turkestan Republic in Kashgar in 1933, as well as the processes of Soviet collectivization and migration in Central Asia, which contributed to an increase in migration flows towards the USSR, including the future Kyrgyz SSR.

The photograph is provided by the Central State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents of the KR.
