The hearings in the case where TikTok, YouTube, and Meta are accused of harming children's mental health begin today in Los Angeles. The plaintiffs—a 19-year-old California resident whose name is not disclosed, and her mother, Karen Glenn—claim that the platforms "deliberately create addictive mechanisms that negatively impacted their daughter's mental state, leading to suicidal thoughts and self-harm."

According to court documents, the girl started using social media at the age of ten, despite her mother's attempts to limit access through special software.

The plaintiffs argue that "the defendants' product design allows children to bypass parental consent," pointing to the "addictive design" characteristic of Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, as well as the frequency of notifications from these services, which led to the girl's addiction to them. They believe this coincided with a deterioration in her mental health.

The plaintiffs are seeking monetary compensation from the defendants, the amount of which will be determined by the court. It is expected that high-profile representatives from the three mentioned companies will be questioned during the proceedings. Many experts believe that this case could become landmark, as accusations against popular platforms have been raised for a long time, but serious investigations have yet to take place.
