At a recent meeting of the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan, it was reported that in 2025 there was a decrease in infant mortality, however, there is simultaneously an increase in maternal mortality.

According to information from the department's press service, the infant mortality rate is 13.5 per 1,000 live births, which is a decrease of 4.2% compared to last year.

The main causes contributing to infant mortality remain unchanged: perinatal diseases occupy the first place, accounting for 65.7% of cases (1,224 children), congenital anomalies are in second place (15.5%, or 289 children), and respiratory diseases are third (8.2%, or 152 children). At the same time, there is a 28.1% increase in infectious and parasitic diseases.

At the same time, the number of maternal mortality cases has increased. In 2024, there were 48 cases recorded (34.8 per 100,000 live births), which is 35.4% higher than the previous year's figure (25.7, or 36 cases).

Health Minister Kanbek Dosmambetov noted that the levels of maternal and child mortality are key indicators of the state of the healthcare system and must remain among the priority tasks, as they are related to the preservation of the lives of women and newborns.

The increase in maternal mortality was characterized by the minister as a "serious signal for making management decisions" and he instructed to develop a set of necessary measures within a week. He emphasized the importance of revising antenatal care standards with a focus on quality, as well as the need for digital integration of primary care and hospitals. He also highlighted the importance of strict routing of pregnant women from at-risk groups, enhancing telemedicine consultations, and implementing prenatal screening.

"Preventing complications, timely hospitalization, and access to qualified care must become our main priorities," added Kanbek Dosmambetov.
