According to information published by Reuters, the U.S. State Department is developing a new internet resource that will facilitate access for users in countries with strict internet censorship to blocked information.

It is expected that the portal will be available at freedom.gov, allowing citizens of European countries and other regions to bypass content access restrictions imposed by their governments.

One source for Reuters noted that the project discusses the possibility of using VPN technologies to mask internet traffic so that it appears to be originating from the U.S. According to him, U.S. authorities do not intend to track users' actions on the portal.

The project is being led by Deputy Secretary of State Sarah Rogers. Initially, the initiative was planned to be presented at the Munich Security Conference, but the presentation has been postponed indefinitely.

There have been disputes within the State Department regarding this idea. Some staff members express concerns that the new portal could allow users to access information that may be deemed extremist or inciting hatred.

Reuters notes that the launch of this service could complicate diplomatic relations between the U.S. administration and their European partners, creating the impression that Washington is encouraging citizens of EU countries to ignore local laws.
