In 2025, there was a significant decline in migration to the U.S.: for the first time since the Great Depression, the number of Americans leaving exceeded the number of those arriving.

According to a study by the Brookings Institution, around 150,000 people left the country during this period, leading to a negative net migration. Forecasts for 2026 indicate an even greater outflow of the population.

According to The Wall Street Journal, in 2025, the number of immigrants decreased to 2.6-2.7 million, significantly lower than nearly 6 million in 2023.

An analysis of data from 15 countries, which have complete or partial information for 2025, showed that at least 180,000 Americans moved abroad.

According to estimates from the State Department, in 2022, there were 1.6 million Americans living in Mexico, over 250,000 in Canada, and more than 325,000 in the United Kingdom, totaling over 1.5 million Americans in Europe.

Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, the number of Americans in Portugal has increased by more than 500 percent, with a 36 percent increase occurring just in 2024.

Ireland welcomed 10,000 Americans in 2025, which is double the number compared to the previous year. At the same time, in 2024, more Americans moved to Germany than Germans to the U.S.

Key factors contributing to this trend include remote work, rising living costs in the U.S., and changes in lifestyle preferences.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported 675,000 deportations and 2.2 million "self-deportations" last year.
