Denmark First in Europe to Eliminate HIV and Syphilis Transmission from Mother to Child
According to WHO data, from 2021 to 2024, Denmark was able to achieve all key indicators, including a low level of infection transmission and a high percentage of pregnant women undergoing testing and treatment.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that this achievement illustrates how strong political will and continuous investment in primary healthcare can protect pregnant women and their children from such diseases.
The elimination of HIV and syphilis transmission from mother to child means that at least 95% of pregnant women in the country are tested and treated, and the number of new infections among infants is less than 50 per 100,000 births per year.
WHO emphasizes that the elimination of transmission of these infections is the result of years of efforts by healthcare workers and the development of the healthcare system, among which the improvement of data collection systems and laboratory capacities play an important role.
Denmark joins a group of 20 countries and territories that have previously also eliminated the transmission of HIV, syphilis, or hepatitis B from mother to child or received certificates from WHO confirming their progress in this area. Among them are Armenia, Belarus, and Moldova.
As of November 2025, more than 15,000 cases of HIV infection have been registered in Kyrgyzstan. More than 80 new cases of the disease are identified in the country each month.
Experts report that the most common route of HIV transmission in the country is sexual, accounting for 62.7% of cases. The parenteral route accounts for 30%, vertical transmission (from mother to child) is 2.3%, and the causes in 5% of cases remain unknown.
