The Media Action Platform of Kyrgyzstan has appealed to the authorities for the necessity of resuming an open dialogue with independent media and society.

Activists emphasize that recent events in the country show signs of improvement in the socio-political situation, which gives hope for more constructive interaction between state structures and independent media.

“The recent decision of the Supreme Court to return the case of journalist and head of the Temirov LIVE project, Mahabat Tajibek kyzy, to the court of first instance, as well as the release of akyn Askat Zhetigen uulu from the punitive isolation facility, is perceived as a sign of possible changes in the approaches to interaction between the state and civil society,” the statement notes.

The appeal emphasizes that free and professional media do not pose a threat to the state.
“On the contrary, independent journalism plays a critically important role in public oversight, allowing for the identification of abuses of power and corruption. In many countries, an open media environment helps prevent systemic problems and strengthens citizens' trust in state institutions,” the activists add.

Experience from recent years shows that restricting the freedom of independent journalism and public discussion can weaken control mechanisms. This creates risks for the abuse of power by law enforcement agencies and other state structures. Therefore, the presence of strong independent media is an important aspect of state stability,” the media platform emphasizes.

Kyrgyzstan has long been considered a country with an open media environment in Central Asia. Maintaining this reputation is important not only for the internal trust of citizens in the authorities but also for the international image, investment attractiveness, and partnership relations of the republic.

In this regard, the platform calls for the development of an open institutional dialogue between the state, the media community, and the civil sector.
“We consider it important to explore the possibility of:

— resuming regular press conferences with the participation of the head of state;
— systematic meetings of the country's leadership with representatives of independent media and civil society organizations;
— creating a platform for professional dialogue between state bodies, the media community, and experts.

This approach will allow for timely informing the leadership about real public sentiments and problems, as well as provide the state with the opportunity to convey its position to society and receive feedback.

We are convinced that cooperation between the state, independent media, and civil society will help strengthen citizens' trust in government institutions, enhance the country's resilience, and ensure the unity of the people. The Media Action Platform of Kyrgyzstan is ready for open and constructive dialogue,” the activists conclude.
