President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that despite recent acts of violence related to the killing of a drug cartel leader, upcoming football matches will take place in a safe environment.
As a result of a military operation, Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, the head of the "Jalisco New Generation" cartel, was killed. This event triggered unrest in various regions of the country, where armed groups began blocking roads and attacking security forces in the states of Jalisco and Michoacán. According to official reports, dozens of people died as a result of the clashes.
However, by the beginning of the week, the situation started to improve. Authorities reported the restoration of normal life in Jalisco, where the city of Guadalajara will be one of the venues for four World Cup matches. Games will also take place in Mexico City at the Azteca Stadium and in Monterrey.
Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup together with the USA and Canada. The president emphasized that the government is ready to ensure the safety of all guests and participants of the tournament.
