The Jamaican forward Mikael Antonio has officially signed a contract with the Qatari club "Al-Sailiya." This step is significant in his career as he returns to professional football after 15 months spent recovering from a serious car accident in Epping Forest. Antonio suffered four femur fractures and spent three weeks in the hospital, with his rehabilitation taking over a year. As a result, the English club "West Ham United" did not extend the contract with the 35-year-old forward at the beginning of the season, leaving him a free agent.
To maintain his physical condition, Mikael trained with the teams "Brentford" and "Leicester City," but full contracts with these clubs were not reached. Negotiations with "Charlton Athletic" also proved unsuccessful. Additionally, he was hindered by a calf injury sustained just when he was close to signing an agreement with "Brentford." Despite the challenges, Antonio managed to come on as a substitute three times for his national team after the accident, confirming his professional skills on the international stage.
The player himself noted that the path to his return was extremely difficult: he had to revalidate his physical readiness and overcome doubts from potential employers. He will now continue his career in Doha, where his new club "Al-Sailiya" currently occupies 10th place in the Qatari league. The date of Antonio's debut for the Qatari team has not yet been determined. In his official statement, he expressed gratitude to the management of "Al-Sailiya" for their trust and noted that he is happy to be doing what he loves again.
