At a meeting of the permanent commission on social issues of the Bishkek City Council, deputy Talaybek Surapbaev ("Jaanı küş – New Force") expressed the need to include competitions in lyan and other national games, such as chükö, in school education on February 27.
According to him, modern children are practically unfamiliar with these traditional games. Vice Mayor Viktoria Mozgacheva noted the presence of sports-oriented schools that promote national sports.
“Moreover, we have a school league that holds district competitions at the beginning of the school year, and at the end, there is a city stage that also takes into account national sports. The winner is sent to Issyk-Kul. Children actively participate and show interest,” she added.
She also mentioned the sports competition "Zhetkinchek," which will take place on June 1, and emphasized that children with disabilities will also be able to participate, which expands access to national sports for everyone.
Surapbaev noted that there are 119 schools in Bishkek and proposed organizing events for national games in educational institutions. “Today, most children have become 'experts' in mobile games, and interest in football has also decreased. This needs to be corrected,” he emphasized.
Note: The game chükö, also known as "upay," is a traditional Kyrgyz game with bones, where children knock down chükö (alchiks) and collect them in sets of three bones.
Lyan is a traditional game for children and teenagers in Central Asia, in which participants take turns trying to keep a shuttlecock (a piece of skin with a weight resembling a feather) in the air using their feet.
Players must perform a certain number of hits without letting the lyan fall, progressing from one level of difficulty to another. The winner is the one who completes all levels first.
