The Marshall Islands have become a pioneer on the planet by launching a nationwide unconditional basic income program. This is reported by The Guardian.

As part of new initiatives aimed at reducing the cost of living and decreasing emigration, every resident of the country will receive about $200 quarterly. These funds are available through a bank account, check, or in the form of cryptocurrency using an official digital wallet.

The Minister of Finance of the Marshall Islands, David Paul, commented: “Although the amount of $200 per person per quarter, which totals about $800 a year, is not enough to quit a job, it significantly boosts people's morale.”

The first payments were already made at the end of November. This program is funded from a special fund created as a result of an agreement with the United States aimed at compensating for the damage caused to the Marshall Islands by American nuclear tests. The fund manages assets exceeding $1.3 billion, and the U.S. will allocate an additional $500 million by 2027.

The Marshall Islands are an archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Australia.
