The Kyrgyz Republic will receive a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in the amount of 61.7 million euros, which will be directed towards updating the national electricity grid. This was reported by the EBRD press service.

As part of this financial package, an investment grant of up to 3 million euros and technical assistance funds amounting to 3 million euros are also included. These investments will allow for the reconstruction of the electricity transmission infrastructure in the country.

This project will enable the National Electric Network of Kyrgyzstan to construct a new 53-kilometer power line with a voltage of 500 kilovolts, connecting Kemin and Balakchy. A new substation, also with a capacity of 500 kilovolts, will be built in Balakchy, the EBRD reported.

According to the bank's data, Kyrgyzstan's energy sector needs modernization, as about 90% of substations have been in operation for over 25 years. Technical and commercial losses in the electricity networks reach nearly 14.6%, significantly exceeding international standards.

Modernization will reduce electricity losses by 34 gigawatt-hours per year and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 3,323 tons in carbon dioxide equivalent annually.

The implementation of this project will ensure reliable electricity supply and enable Kyrgyzstan to export surplus "green" hydroelectric energy to neighboring countries.

The EBRD has been operating in Kyrgyzstan since 1992 and during this time has invested approximately 1.15 billion euros in 280 different projects.
