In Kyrgyzstan, a special methodological guide has been created for the rapid assessment of pasture conditions across the country, as reported by Natalia Kilyazova, head of the Pastures and Forage Department of the Kyrgyz Scientific Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Pastures, which is subordinate to the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry.

This methodology was developed in collaboration with the Institute of Pastures and Forages and the Veterinary Service of Pastoral Agriculture. The main criteria for assessment include the condition of vegetation, the presence of signs of degradation, as well as the spread of weeds and shrubs, including stoniness.

Research has shown that the pastures in the Suusamyr Valley are generally in good condition and characterized by rich vegetation. However, local residents noted that in some areas, the shrub Caragana (altygana) is actively spreading.

Specialists conducted tests of chemical and mechanical methods to combat this vegetation. The use of low-toxicity glyphosate-based herbicides on flat, fenced areas yielded good results. The destruction of shrubs allows for the preservation of forage vegetation, which recovers within a year provided the pasture is given time to rest. A mechanical method is also used - uprooting the shrubs followed by sowing perennial grasses.

The ministry noted that measures to counteract the spread of Caragana are implemented selectively and without harm to the ecosystem. The predominance of forage grasses in pastures is crucial, as Caragana hinders free grazing of livestock and poses a safety threat. Work in this direction will continue to preserve pastures and prevent degradation processes.
