In a village on Issyk-Kul, once known throughout the USSR, they are restoring the population of Merino sheep.
He noted that during the Soviet era, their farm was quite popular. "We were among the leaders, having over 45,000 sheep and specializing in white fine-wool meat and wool sheep. However, over time, the population of white sheep sharply decreased, and this breed nearly disappeared," Kölbaev shared.
Now, according to the manager, the situation is changing. "Currently, our farm 'Orgochor' has 1,300 merino sheep. The demand for wool is increasing, and we strive to promote the breeding of these sheep and the collection of their wool among local residents. At a small enterprise in the village of Orgochor, it is possible to process up to 20 kg of wool per hour. We receive many orders from abroad. Our wool is in demand for the production of felt, from which 'ala kiyiz' (felt carpets) and toys are made. We need additional equipment," he added.
Almazbek Kölbaev also noted that if the government provided farmers with low-interest loans, it would allow them to acquire the necessary equipment for wool processing. This, in turn, would create new jobs and increase the value of wool.
As of today, 1 kilogram of wool is sold for 200 soms.
According to information from the Ministry of Justice, Almazbek Aiylchievich Kolbaev holds the position of head of the "Orgochor" experimental sheep breeding station branch of the State Enterprise "Kyrgyzgosplemzavod," which operates under the Department of Breeding Livestock, Pastures, and Forage of the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry.
As previously reported by Turmush, the village of Orgochor was famous in the Soviet Union for the local residents' breeding of Kyrgyz fine-wool sheep. Initially, only a few families lived in the village, for whom barrack-type houses and a barn for feed were built.
In 1932, the Orgochor state farm was established. Later, the government built sheepfolds and houses for livestock and organized a farm managed by V. Voronov.
Since 1956, the state farm began breeding purebred sheep, and in 1960, the Issyk-Kul sheep breeding station was established based on the breeding farm. This enterprise played a key role in providing the country with breeding small ruminants and became known for its achievements in wool production and breeding young stock, winning the Red Banner of the USSR. More than 30 employees were awarded the Order of Lenin. Jamake Tynaev, the senior shepherd of the Orgochor experimental station, was a Hero of Socialist Labor.
