How Do Drivers Kill the Engine by Checking the Oil Level?

The procedure for checking the oil level can be dangerous for the engine if certain important rules are not followed. Many drivers neglect these rules, which leads to a reduced lifespan of their vehicles. Let's consider the main mistakes that can occur at this moment.

Contamination of the dipstick

This is one of the most serious mistakes. Dust and sand often accumulate in the engine compartment of the car. Almost no one opens this compartment for cleaning during washing. As a result, dirt can settle around the oil dipstick, creating a hazard.
When pulling out the dipstick, many drivers do not notice that they are touching the accumulated dirt. When returning the dipstick, they may introduce foreign particles into the crankcase. It is not advisable to expect the filter to handle this problem — sand particles can damage important engine components, such as the crankshaft and cylinder walls. Oil contaminated with sand has a significant negative impact on the engine.

Incorrect position of the vehicle

Novice drivers often do not consider that checking the oil level should be done on a level surface. If the car is parked at an angle, this can lead to measurement errors. The driver may not notice that the oil level is below the minimum and postpone adding oil, while the engine is already experiencing a lack of lubrication.

This can lead to increased friction between parts and rapid engine wear. Therefore, it is very important for the vehicle to be in the correct position. Make sure the car is stationary, turn off the gear, and release the brakes. If it starts to roll, it's better to choose another spot.

When to take measurements?

Some drivers incorrectly choose the time to check the oil level. For example, they may check it immediately after starting the engine, which leads to underestimated readings.

The most appropriate time to measure is after an overnight parking or 15-20 minutes after a long drive. In the first case, the oil has time to drain down, and in the second, it becomes more fluid and quickly moves to the oil pan.

If you check the oil level immediately after starting a cold engine, the lubrication does not have time to return down, and you may mistakenly think that you need to add oil.

Although overfilling oil is less critical than a shortage, it can also cause problems. Excess oil disrupts the recirculation of crankcase gases and can lead to leaks and breakdowns. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the oil level does not exceed the maximum mark on the dipstick.

And one more simple rule: after pulling out the dipstick, do not forget to wipe it with a clean cloth, then insert it back and only after that assess the oil level. Regular checks (at least once a month) will help avoid many problems.
