Two hours of help per week slows brain aging by 20%
For two decades, researchers observed more than 30,000 Americans over the age of 51. The data obtained indicates that those who regularly offered help maintained mental clarity longer compared to their peers. Their rate of cognitive decline was found to be 15-20% lower.
Notably, it is not necessary to be a volunteer in formal organizations for this to be effective. Even simple support for neighbors, relatives, or friends yields a similar effect. For example, driving someone to the doctor, playing with children, helping with taxes, or mowing the lawn—all of these activities are also beneficial for the brain.
“Daily acts of assistance—both formal and informal—can have a lasting positive impact on cognitive abilities,” notes the head of the study, Sae Hwan Han.
The optimal amount of time for providing help is between two to four hours a week. Regular participation over several years brings the greatest benefit. In contrast, completely refraining from helping others may lead to a faster deterioration of cognitive functions.
The researchers suggest that the positive influence is achieved through several mechanisms. Providing help reduces levels of chronic stress and inflammatory processes in the body, which can negatively affect the brain, and also strengthens social connections and enhances psychological support.
The results of the study were published in the journal Social Science & Medicine, and the research was funded by the National Institute on Aging in the U.S.
According to Han, these findings are particularly significant for an aging society, where the issues of loneliness and social isolation among the elderly are becoming increasingly relevant. “Many older adults with low health levels continue to make important contributions to society, and it is they who can benefit the most from the opportunity to help those around them,” emphasizes the researcher.
