Expert: Complex Data Protection Laws Can Be "Literally Harmful to Health"
He cited the words of the head of one of the major German clinics, who claimed that "data protection leads to more patient deaths than infections in hospitals."
According to Detterman, medical professionals often do not share necessary information about patients due to concerns that it may be improper. "In medicine, there is a saying: the dose makes the poison. Anything consumed in excess can be harmful. I believe that overly strict or convoluted privacy laws can have counterproductive consequences," the professor noted.
He also added that European legislation has become so complex that companies find it increasingly difficult to comply with it, despite the good intentions of those who create it.
