Experts state that patients with oncological diseases, especially those with one lung, are at high risk of developing severe forms of COVID-19 and have a high likelihood of fatal outcomes. This was noted in a study published in the journal "Healthcare of Kyrgyzstan."

The article emphasizes that the approach to treating such patients should be based on the results of a detailed examination and should involve phased, yet prompt actions in accordance with current clinical guidelines.

The authors of the study describe two clinical cases of patients with a single lung who underwent radical surgery for lung removal due to cancer and were in long-term remission. Both patients underwent pneumonectomy in 2014. In 2024, they were hospitalized in the thoracic surgery department in critical condition with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19.

Despite their severe condition and unique circumstances, the treatment of both patients was successful, which, according to the doctors, was made possible by timely and active intervention carried out in strict accordance with the latest approved protocols.

The authors of the study note that although the COVID-19 pandemic is officially recognized as over, the risk of coronavirus infection remains relevant, especially for patients from high-risk groups. Specialists emphasize that patients with a single lung belong to the category with extremely high risk and increased likelihood of fatal outcomes.

Doctors also stress the necessity of mandatory coronavirus testing at the first signs of possible viral lung damage in such patients, which can significantly reduce the likelihood of serious complications and adverse consequences.
