At the same time, experts believe that the actual number may be 2-3 times higher, as many people are unaware of their condition.
As of January 1, 2021, there were 74,801 people on dispensary registration with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, which accounts for approximately 1.1% of the total population. More than 95% of them suffer from type 2 diabetes, which is largely related to lifestyle factors, including obesity, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition.
“Over the past 20 years, the incidence of diabetes has increased by almost 50%. Projections for 2025 indicate that the number of registered patients with diabetes will reach about 90,000. However, specialists emphasize that the actual number of patients may be 2-3 times higher, as many are unaware of their illness,” the report states.
Diabetes negatively affects blood vessels, the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.
Among patients suffering from diabetes in Kyrgyzstan:
- diabetic neuropathy is diagnosed in 50-60% of patients;
- nephropathy is found in 20% of patients;
- retinopathy is present in one-third of patients.
Without proper control, the disease can lead to blindness, kidney failure, and amputations.
Medical professionals note that up to 80% of cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented.
Prevention tips:
- Maintain a balanced diet — increase your intake of vegetables and whole grains, and reduce sugar and fatty foods.
- Engage in regular physical activity — spend at least 30 minutes a day walking, dancing, or exercising.
- Monitor your weight — even a weight loss of 5-10% can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
- Drink enough water and avoid sugary drinks.
- Regularly check your blood sugar levels — especially after age 40 or if you are overweight.
At the national and regional levels, specialists are organizing blood glucose screenings, training medical workers and the population, and conducting campaigns to disseminate information about healthy eating and physical activity.
