According to the Ministry of Health, more than 84 thousand people suffering from diabetes have been officially recorded in Kyrgyzstan. This number is ten times lower than expected, which raises serious concerns.

Many of these patients do not receive the necessary treatment and are even unaware that they have this disease.

As a result, some develop serious complications, such as diabetic retinopathy and kidney damage, which requires hemodialysis. Vascular problems are also observed, leading to amputations. Government spending on treating such complications through hemodialysis exceeds 2 billion soms per year.

The Ministry of Health also noted that, despite concerns about rising prices for sugary drinks and a possible decrease in demand, there is no reason for alarm. If the consumption of sweet soda decreases, people are choosing healthier alternatives, such as water, juices, and fruit drinks.

The issue of diabetes was raised by Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov, who stated: “Diabetes is becoming increasingly common, and it is affecting younger people. We are spending billions of soms on treatment and disability, so sugary drinks in Kyrgyzstan should become more expensive.”
