The shortage of the important medication tramadol, necessary for the treatment of chronic pain, has once again become a pressing issue in Kyrgyzstan. This was reported by Milana Turgunalieva, co-chair of the Association of Palliative and Hospice Care.

According to available information, tramadol is supplied to the country by two distributors. However, due to incorrect calculations of the needs for inpatient and outpatient patients, a large portion of the medication was destroyed this year due to non-use and expiration.

"Pharmaceutical companies are refusing to supply due to losses. Although there are international standards and methods for calculating needs, no one is addressing this," she noted.

It is also often observed that within the framework of state procurement, medications are purchased that are then not fully utilized by medical institutions and are subject to write-off and destruction.

In cases where excess or long-stored medications with not yet expired shelf life are identified, it is necessary to organize their redistribution among medical institutions and regions where there is a shortage of these medications.
