According to information shared by psychiatrist Yulia Ulitina on "Birinchi Radio," there is a growing number of citizens in Kyrgyzstan seeking medical assistance for issues related to depression, insomnia, panic attacks, and post-traumatic stress disorders.

Yulia Ulitina noted that the number of patients with such symptoms has significantly increased, and unfortunately, the trend is worsening.

“Every year, the number of patients grows. Over the past five years, 53,000 people have undergone inpatient treatment, and 32,000 have received outpatient consultations. Currently, there are 80 people in the psychosomatic disorders department receiving inpatient treatment, and all beds are occupied. Some patients are willing to wait for their turn for hospitalization. Unfortunately, we observe seasonal fluctuations: in spring and autumn, the number of people with depressive states increases. Previously, we recorded 50-60 hospitalizations, but in recent years, after the COVID-19 pandemic, this number has risen,” the specialist shared.

The age of the patients ranges from 19 to 70 years.

“Unfortunately, there is a strong stigma in our society. Many patients openly admit that they are afraid to enter the territory of the psychiatric dispensary, fearing that acquaintances and relatives will see them. At the same time, they do not realize that their condition can worsen to the level of suicidal thoughts and actions,” the doctor noted.

Ulitina also emphasized that patients often postpone visiting a doctor, hoping that the problem will resolve itself, and come for an appointment only when their condition has deteriorated. Inpatient treatment lasts for 30 days, after which patients continue to receive supportive therapy on an outpatient basis for six months.

According to Health Minister Erkin Checheybaev, 11 percent of the population in Kyrgyzstan suffers from mental disorders. Currently, a national mental health strategy is being developed in the country, which is an important step towards addressing this issue.
