The farm will produce about 100 pigs annually
A Japanese company, PorMedTec, plans to launch a farm for breeding cloned pigs by 2027, which will be used for organ transplantation to humans, as reported by Nikkei Asia.
In collaboration with the American biotechnology firm eGenesis, PorMedTec will create cloned pigs using cells from ordinary pigs. Before use, the biomaterial will undergo genetic modifications to reduce the risk of organ rejection in patients.
The farm will be located in Osaka and aims to produce about 100 pigs annually. Once they reach the required size, the pigs will be sent to medical institutions for organ extraction. The farm will utilize modern equipment, including artificial intelligence monitoring systems to track the temperature and other biomarkers of the animals.
In September of this year, eGenesis reported that a patient who received a kidney from a genetically modified pig lived for seven months without the need for dialysis (the process of cleansing the blood of toxins).
