During his visit, O'Sullivan will hold a series of meetings with representatives of the Kazakh government. This will be his fifth trip to Kazakhstan in the last three years. He first visited the country in November 2021, then in April 2022, followed by June 2022, and his last trip took place in January 2023.
The EU press service noted that this position was created by the European Commission to ensure constant contact with third countries to prevent circumvention of sanctions imposed against Russia as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.
David O'Sullivan has been serving as the EU's International Special Envoy for Sanctions since January 2023. Previously, he held the position of Secretary-General of the European Commission and was the EU Ambassador to the USA; his diplomatic experience in European institutions exceeds 30 years.
