In the statement, the agency noted that the vessel was flying the Russian flag and was heading to one of Russia's ports, conducting a peaceful passage through international waters. It was also emphasized that the American authorities had been informed of the tanker’s affiliation with Russia.
According to Russian diplomats, the stopping and inspection of vessels on the high seas is only permissible in exceptional cases and only with the consent of the flag state, which Moscow did not provide. Furthermore, Russia had already protested to the U.S. regarding the actions of the Coast Guard concerning the "Marinera".
The Russian Foreign Ministry characterized the actions of the American military as a gross violation of international maritime law and freedom of navigation, and also pointed out the potential threats to the lives of the sailors and the ecological situation in the region. The U.S. references to its sanctions measures were deemed unfounded.
Russia called on Washington to immediately cease its illegal actions regarding the tanker, ensure the rights of the crew members, and facilitate their prompt return to their homeland.
