Moscow is hit by one of the most powerful snowfalls in 146 years

According to the press service of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, the snowfall that hit Moscow on January 9 became one of the strongest in the history of weather observations. The press service noted.

The VDNH meteorological station recorded that over the course of a day, the capital received 21.4 mm of precipitation, which corresponds to almost 40% of the monthly norm. Stronger snowfalls were observed only a few times during the winter months: February 4, 2018 (24.2 mm), December 14, 1981 (23.2 mm), January 8, 1970 (23.0 mm), and December 12, 2022 (22.6 mm).

After the snowfall ended, the snow cover in Moscow reached 30–38 cm, while in the Moscow region it reached 51 cm, as recorded by the Cherusti meteorological station.

The Hydrometeorological Center indicated that over 146 years of observations during the winter period, 24 cases of heavy snowfall with precipitation exceeding 15 mm were registered in Moscow. On average, such weather events occur once every five to six years.
