The snow avalanches that formed on the section of the road from 64 to 119 kilometers have caused the complete closure of the road, as reported by DEP No. 26.
On the section from 64 to 95 kilometers, the road was opened for one-way traffic. Work to clear the remaining part of the road is continuing, and preliminary data indicates that the volume of snow is about 5,000 cubic meters.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations in the Osh region, there have been no recorded cases of livestock being left in the mountains.
Snowfalls in this region are a frequent and serious phenomenon, especially in the winter and off-season period (from November to May). They create transportation problems and complicate the lives of local residents.
The winter in this area is harsh, and a large amount of snow falls each year. The main road connecting the valley (Myrza-Ake — Kara-Kulja — Alaykuu) is often blocked by snow drifts and avalanches. This can lead to a complete halt of traffic for several days.
The sections of the road from 65 to 110 kilometers are avalanche-prone, and the Ministry of Emergency Situations regularly issues warnings and imposes traffic restrictions.
During heavy snowfalls, the snow cover can reach significant heights, as was the case in January 2021 in the village of Oi-Tal, where the snow reached up to 1 meter. Movement through such snow is difficult for horses and cattle.
For instance, on November 18, 2016, Turmush reported that in Alaykuu, due to the fallen snow, classes in schools and kindergartens were canceled. Parents did not send their children to school, as the snow height was almost as tall as a human.
Due to snowfalls and power line breaks, villages sometimes remain without electricity for several days.
During heavy snowfalls, road and rescue services operate in an enhanced mode, clearing roads and reminding drivers of the need to follow safety measures, including the use of winter tires and anti-skid chains.
