The request for the death penalty was voiced during the final court session at the Central District Court of Seoul, where the prosecution insisted that Yoon Suk Yeol was the leader of the rebellion, seeking to maintain power by taking control of the country's judicial and legislative systems.

However, the former president himself rejects all accusations. A court decision is expected to be made in February.

According to Reuters, death penalty sentences have not been carried out in South Korea for several decades.

Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in early December 2024, explaining his move as necessary to "eliminate pro-North Korean anti-state forces."

However, this situation lasted only a few hours, as parliament revoked it. As a result, lawmakers voted for the impeachment of the president, leading to his removal from office and subsequent arrest.
