The request for the death penalty for Yoon Suk Yeol was voiced during the final session in the Seoul court, according to information from the Yonhap agency. The special prosecutor's team described the former president as the leader of a rebellion who attempted to maintain power by controlling the judiciary and legislative systems.

Yoon Suk Yeol is accused of conspiring with the former defense minister and other participants to organize a rebellion aimed at undermining the Constitution.

Additionally, he is charged with using the army and police to block the National Assembly complex, as well as the arrest and detention of several politicians, including the speaker of parliament. The prosecution claims that the former president sought to prevent lawmakers from voting to repeal his decree on the imposition of martial law.

According to official data, Yoon Suk Yeol declared a "state of emergency martial law" late on the evening of December 3, 2024, explaining this as a necessity to protect the Republic of Korea from the threat of "North Korean communist forces." Just 150 minutes later, parliament decided to immediately repeal the martial law.

On December 14, lawmakers voted for the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol, which led to his official removal from office, after which he was arrested and brought to trial.
