Germany's Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil commented on the U.S. decision to impose new tariffs on goods from several European countries, emphasizing that Europe will not succumb to "blackmail or provocation." This was reported by Tagesspiegel.

Klingbeil stated: "We will not go down the path chosen by Trump. Blackmail and provocations, neither through tariffs nor words, will be accepted."

He stressed the need to provide the U.S. with a "clear and united response" from European countries. The Vice Chancellor noted that, in Europe's view, the White House has "crossed a line" regarding territorial integrity, and Europeans will not accept the loss of the island.

Klingbeil added: "Everyone in the U.S. should understand that we do not agree with this. A line has been crossed." At the same time, he noted that the willingness for dialogue with Washington still remains.

Recall that on Saturday, January 17, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 10% tariffs on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland in February. According to him, the rate could later increase to 25% and last until an agreement is reached regarding the purchase of Greenland by the United States.

After Trump's statement, eight NATO countries expressed their support for Denmark and its autonomous territory of Greenland, reaffirming principles of sovereignty and warning against the "dangerous negative dynamics" caused by such rhetoric.

European Union leaders also condemned the U.S. threats. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa emphasized that "Europe will remain united, coordinated, and will defend its sovereignty."

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire for the island to become part of the U.S. In response, the authorities of Denmark and Greenland warned Washington against attempts to seize the territory and called for respect for their sovereignty.
