As reported by The Guardian, the observations will focus on capturing an image of the rotating disk surrounding the black hole at the center of the galaxy Messier 87. The EHT project, which combines 12 radio telescopes from around the world, from Antarctica to Spain and South Korea, aims to achieve this during the spring.

Shepherd Markoff, a professor of astronomy and experimental philosophy at the University of Cambridge, as well as a co-founder of the EHT consortium, described the upcoming imaging as "revolutionary" due to its technical complexity and significance for science.

According to her, the results of the observations will allow for a more precise determination of the black hole's rotation speed and reveal the mechanisms responsible for the formation of powerful jets — which remains one of the main mysteries in astrophysics.

Markoff also noted that, despite the fear of black holes, they may hold the key to understanding the processes of forming the first galaxies in the universe and their evolution over time.

During the new observational campaign, scientists hope to obtain a complete image of the black hole approximately every three days, depending on the position of the Earth and the availability of the object for various radio telescopes.
