Trump announced the movement of the American armada towards Iran
He noted: "Another armada is currently heading to Iran, so we will wait. I hope they will make a deal."
On Monday, the president added that the situation around Iran remains tense, but did not share details about possible actions Washington might take regarding the Islamic Republic. According to Axios, citing sources in the administration, Trump does not rule out military action against Iran, despite American officials believing that protests in the country are "mostly suppressed."
The U.S. Central Command previously confirmed that the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln has arrived in its designated area in the Indian Ocean. Sources from The New York Times report that it could be ready to conduct strikes against Iran within a day or two.
Protests in Iran began in late December against the backdrop of the national currency's decline. Since January 8, following calls from Reza Pahlavi, the son of the overthrown Shah in 1979, the protests have become more widespread, and the internet in the country temporarily ceased to function. In various cities, demonstrations escalated into clashes with law enforcement and were accompanied by slogans against the current regime. There were reports of casualties among both protesters and security forces.
On January 12, Iranian authorities stated that they had managed to bring the situation under control, and two days later announced the end of the unrest. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian promised to continue economic reforms and blamed the protests on the U.S. and Israel.
Against this backdrop, Trump threatened a strike against Iran if security forces opened fire on protesters. On the night of January 22, Tehran closed its airspace, anticipating possible American attacks.
Iranian authorities, for their part, expressed readiness for negotiations, emphasizing that if necessary, the country is fully prepared for war.
