At a press conference on Sunday, February 1, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that in response to the EU's decision, "the armies of European countries are considered terrorist groups." This statement is based on a law passed in Iran in 2019. According to DW, Ghalibaf also commented that Europe's actions demonstrate a desire to please America.

In a show of support for the IRGC, some members of the Iranian parliament arrived in military uniforms of this military formation and shouted slogans such as "Death to America" and "Death to Israel."

Earlier, on Thursday, the European Union decided to include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on its list of terrorist organizations, justifying this by the brutal suppression of protests in Iran. Officials in Brussels noted that this decision is primarily symbolic, as serious sanctions against Iran are already in place. Discussions about adding the IRGC to the EU's "blacklist" have been ongoing for several years.

The U.S. was the first to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization in 2019, during Donald Trump's presidency. In response, Iran passed a law that provides for reciprocal measures in the event of similar actions by other countries.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran is an elite military formation and, according to experts, holds more influence and capabilities than the regular army. In recent years, the IRGC has significantly strengthened its position, acquiring stakes in various sectors of the economy, including hospitality, construction, transportation, and aviation.
