The European Union has decided to include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in its list of terrorist organizations. This was announced at a press conference by Josep Borrell, the head of EU diplomacy, following a meeting of the foreign ministers of EU countries. The announcement was made through her account on the social network X, where she emphasized that "a regime that kills its citizens is heading towards its own demise."
During the meeting, new sanctions against Iran were also approved, which include 15 high-ranking Iranian officials working in the fields of security and justice, as well as six companies. Borrell pointed out that these measures are aimed at those involved in suppressing the protests that began in the country at the end of last year due to the economic discontent of the population.
The head of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, criticized the EU's decision, calling it "a significant strategic mistake." He added that "several countries are trying to prevent a large-scale war in our region, and among them are not European states; on the contrary, Europe is only fueling the conflict."
According to official sources, the number of protest victims exceeds 3,000 people; however, Time magazine, citing information from two Health Ministry officials, reports 30,000 fatalities. It is difficult to determine the exact number of victims due to the unstable internet situation in the country.
The IRGC is an elite unit of the Iranian Armed Forces, created to protect the ideals and achievements of the Islamic Revolution from internal and external threats. This formation has already been included in the lists of terrorist organizations of countries such as the USA, Australia, and Canada.
