Initiatives for the extension were submitted by Zelensky to the parliament on January 12, and on January 14, the deputies approved them and sent them for the president's signature. Starting from February 3 and until May 4, 2025, according to the new bills, both mobilization and martial law will be in effect. The time frames will be extended based on previous decisions that were presented at the end of October 2025.
Martial law in Ukraine has been in effect since February 24, 2022, when Russian military actions began. On the same day, Zelensky signed a law on general mobilization. In August 2025, the Ukrainian government provided the opportunity for young people aged 18 to 22 to leave the country.
Martial law allows authorities to impose various restrictions. In particular, this may concern freedom of movement within the country, as well as restrictions on transportation for both Ukrainian citizens and foreigners, notes "RBK-Ukraine." The introduction of labor conscription and mandatory public works for certain categories of citizens is also permitted. Additionally, forced confiscation of property for the needs of the army may occur.
Under martial law, political parties that threaten Ukraine's sovereignty may be banned, and rallies, demonstrations, and mass events may be restricted, as stated in the publication.
Due to the ongoing martial law, the presidential elections in Ukraine scheduled for 2024 did not take place.
