According to a report by Meduza, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed in Libya.
The circumstances of his death have not yet been clarified. The Saudi channel "Al-Hadat" reports that 53-year-old Saif was shot in his home, located near the city of Zintan, when four assailants broke into his garden.
According to "Al-Hadat," the incident occurred as a result of a clash between two armed groups when members of one attempted to detain Gaddafi.
Saif's death was confirmed by his political advisor Abdallah Othman on his Facebook page, although details of the incident were not disclosed.
Saif al-Islam was the second son of Muammar Gaddafi, who ruled Libya from 1979 to 2011. Despite lacking official positions, Saif played an important role in international negotiations and the internal affairs of the country until his father's regime fell.
After Gaddafi's overthrow in 2011, Saif was arrested, but in 2017 information about his release emerged. He returned to politics and intended to participate in presidential elections in 2018 and 2021, but the elections did not take place.
In 2011, the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for Saif Gaddafi's arrest on charges of crimes against humanity, but he was not extradited to court.
