
Narges Mohammadi, 53, was sentenced to 6 years for "participation in gatherings and conspiracy to commit crimes," as well as 1.5 years for propaganda activities. Additionally, she is banned from leaving the country for two years after her release, and for the following two years, she must reside in the city of Khusf.
The activist was arrested on December 12, 2025, during mourning events for human rights defender Hosrow Alikordi. On February 2, she declared a hunger strike, and according to her lawyer, she was hospitalized a few days before the court's decision due to deteriorating health but was soon returned to prison. The lawyer hopes for the possibility of temporary release on bail for treatment.
She holds the position of Vice President of the Iranian Human Rights Defenders Center and has faced arrests for her human rights activities and criticism of the authorities for 20 years, having been detained 13 times.
With the new sentence, her total imprisonment term amounts to 31 years, of which she has already spent about 10 years in prison. In 2021, she was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison and 80 lashes for "anti-state propaganda." In December 2024, she was temporarily released due to health reasons.
According to information from her supporters, during her years of imprisonment, Mohammadi suffered several heart attacks, and in 2022, she underwent emergency surgery. At the end of 2024, a bone formation was discovered, which was subsequently removed.
