Former President of South Korea Yoon Suk-yeol sentenced to five years in prison for obstruction of arrest

Yoon Suk-yeol
The court proceedings are related to Yoon Suk-yeol's actions in December 2024, when he attempted to impose martial law in the country. He justified this decision by the need to combat "anti-state forces supporting North Korea." However, this regime lasted only a few hours and was revoked by parliament, which soon also voted for the impeachment of the president. As a result, Yoon Suk-yeol was removed from office and subsequently detained.

The court also established that Yoon Suk-yeol violated the legal norms required for the introduction of martial law.

According to the Renhap agency, the prosecution requested ten years of imprisonment for the former president, but Yoon Suk-yeol did not admit his guilt.

The sentence has not yet come into effect and can be appealed.

As reported by Renhap, eight criminal cases have been opened against Yoon Suk-yeol concerning his attempts to impose martial law, and the case of obstruction of arrest became the first to result in a verdict.

Additionally, the former president is accused of attempting to usurp power, for which the prosecution has requested the death penalty. A verdict in this case is expected to be announced on February 19.
