The court found him guilty of illegal enrichment
Irakli Garibashvili, who served as Prime Minister of Georgia, signed an agreement with the prosecutor's office acknowledging his guilt and received a sentence of five years in prison. This decision was made under the article of the criminal code concerning illegal enrichment and obtaining material benefits through criminal means. This information was announced by the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia and published in the media, particularly on DW.
In addition to imprisonment, Garibashvili is required to pay a fine of 1 million lari, which is approximately 319,000 euros. He will also lose assets seized during the search of his residence, which were obtained as a result of illegal activities, according to the Prosecutor General's Office. Their statement reads: "Irakli Garibashvili admits his guilt and agrees to the terms of the agreement."
Garibashvili served as Prime Minister of Georgia from 2013 to 2015 and then from February 2021 to January 2024. From 2019 to 2021, he held the position of Minister of Defense. After his resignation in January 2024, Garibashvili became the leader of the political party "Georgian Dream."
In October 2025, he was charged with money laundering of particularly large amounts of illegally obtained income. According to information provided by the online publication RBC, the investigation established that while holding the positions of Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Garibashvili engaged in entrepreneurial activities, receiving illegal income, which he then laundered through fictitious transactions and by registering property in the names of family members.
