According to DW, Narges Mohammadi was sentenced on February 8, 2026, after being arrested on December 12, 2025, during a memorial ceremony for human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. The activist, known for her fight for women's rights, declared a hunger strike on February 2, 2026. The court sentenced her to six years in prison for "participating in gatherings with the intent to commit crimes" and an additional 1.5 years for propaganda.

Furthermore, after serving her sentence, she will be banned from leaving the country for two years, and she will have to spend another two years in the city of Khusf.

Mustafa Nili, her lawyer, reported that Mohammadi was transferred to the hospital due to deteriorating health but soon returned to prison. He hopes for her temporary release on bail for treatment.

Narges Mohammadi holds the position of vice president of the Center for Human Rights Defenders in Iran and has been arrested multiple times over the past two decades for her active stance against the regime and her human rights work. She has been arrested 13 times in total, and the total sentence imposed on her before the new verdict was 31 years, of which she has already served ten years.

In 2021, she was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison and received 80 lashes for "anti-state propaganda." In December 2024, Mohammadi was temporarily released for health reasons, and her release was later extended.

Supporters of the human rights defender claim that during her years of imprisonment, she suffered several heart attacks, and in 2022, she underwent emergency surgery. At the end of 2024, her lawyer reported that she had a bone growth, which was later successfully removed.
