Freedom House: The level of political rights in the USA is lower than in Mongolia

According to a report by Freedom House, the United States received a score of 73 out of 100 for internet freedom; however, its rating in the area of political rights (34 out of 40) is lower than that of Mongolia, where this indicator stands at 36 out of 40,” notes MiddleAsiaNews.

Since the peaceful revolution of 1990, Mongolia has transitioned to multiparty elections and established itself as an electoral democracy. In general, political rights and civil liberties are respected in the country, although political parties primarily rely on patronage networks rather than genuine competitiveness, and corruption is widespread.

The degree of freedom of a country or region is determined by a composite score of political rights (0-40) and civil liberties (0-60).

Mongolia has a global freedom rating of 84 out of 100, making it a free country, alongside the United States (84/100). In contrast, Russia, with a freedom score of 12 out of 100, internet freedom of 17 out of 100, and a transit countries rating of 1 out of 100, is classified as a non-free country with an established authoritarian regime. Kazakhstan is also considered a non-free country with a freedom score of 23 out of 100.

The United States is a federal republic where citizens enjoy the benefits of a developed political system, a tradition of the rule of law, and broad freedoms of speech and religion. However, in recent years, democratic institutions have faced erosion, manifested in increased political polarization, extremism, pressure from parties on the electoral process, and issues in the criminal justice and immigration systems, as well as growing inequality in wealth and political influence.
