According to meteorologists, hoarfrost is a type of atmospheric precipitation in the form of a very thin layer of ice crystals that form from water vapor in the atmosphere. On thin branches, larger ice crystals, known as rime, sometimes appear.
This effect occurs when the outer surface of objects cools below the dew point, which is the temperature at which the air becomes cold enough for water vapor to turn into liquid. Then this liquid freezes.
