In the Issyk-Kul region, in the village of Issyk-Kul (Mayak), a unique natural phenomenon has occurred, which local residents associate with the cold winter weather. They reported that steam has formed over the lake, creating a fog effect.
According to the residents, this phenomenon is observed every year in the middle of winter. “The depth of the lake here exceeds 700 meters, and therefore, the water temperature remains quite warm. With a sharp change in weather, steam begins to form above the surface of the lake. This phenomenon can last from several days to a week until the air temperature stabilizes. A similar effect is not observed in other places, for example, in the village of Intymak, where the depth of the water body is only 30 meters,” the locals share.

The so-called "frosty steam" is actually fog, not steam in the traditional sense. Warm water, even in winter, does not drop below 0 °C, while the cold winter air cannot hold much water vapor. When warm, moisture-saturated air meets cold air, the moisture quickly condenses, forming tiny droplets or crystals that become visible and create a dense fog over the water.
