In this article, we want to share with you the unique customs practiced by the residents of the Naryn region during the meeting of matchmakers.
Gulbairam Naametbekova, a resident of the village of Uchkun in the Naryn district, shared her experience of participating in such meetings both as a matchmaker and as a guest.
“The parties that meet and receive the matchmakers discuss in advance the number of guests who will accompany the matchmakers. This affects the preparation of the table,” she shared.
Among the traditions is a ritual where the “kudalar” (matchmakers) are welcomed by having flour sprinkled on them (Kyrgyz - “un chachmay”). This ritual symbolizes good intentions between the parties. The matchmakers are then invited to a festively laid table (Kyrgyz - “dastorkon”), where everyone gets acquainted, drinks tea, enjoys food, and makes toasts with wishes for the newlyweds, after which songs begin. There is also a tradition called “kol chaykaar,” where before and after the meal, guests are approached with water and towels,” she added.
Naametbekova noted that recently the tradition of “kiyit kiigizüü,” where each side exchanges clothing such as a chapan, kalpak, or shirt, is becoming less popular.
Another interesting tradition is that when the matchmakers arrive at the bride's parents' home, they “steal” the girl or boy (Kyrgyz - “kudalarдан уурдоо”). The “kidnapped” one is returned for a ransom, which is a playful and game-like element of this ancient tradition,” she explained.
