Why is self-management important in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease? Conclusions of scientists
Given such a high prevalence, the implementation of self-management for COPD becomes particularly relevant. This approach involves the active participation of patients in monitoring their condition: tracking symptoms, adjusting lifestyle, timely recognition of exacerbations, and seeking medical help.
In the conducted review, scientists examined over 60 publications from international databases such as PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library, and eLibrary.ru, covering the period from 2000 to 2025. The analysis included Cochrane systematic reviews, GOLD clinical guidelines, materials from the World Health Organization, as well as data on the implementation of digital technologies in managing COPD.
Findings indicate that traditional "COPD schools" are gradually being replaced by digital solutions, including mobile applications, telemedicine services, and wearable health monitoring devices. The use of virtual reality and gamification contributes to increasing patient motivation and adherence to treatment.
However, researchers also identified several barriers that hinder the implementation of such approaches. These include low levels of digital literacy among elderly patients, poor integration of medical data into electronic systems, and insufficient coordination between healthcare providers and IT platforms.
The authors of the study emphasize that self-management is a key element of the modern approach to managing COPD. They note that for Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, priority areas include the development of national self-management protocols, integration of digital data into eHealth systems, and training healthcare workers in remote patient support methods.
