Dastan Bekeshev, a member of the Jogorku Kenesh, has addressed the head of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) of Kyrgyzstan to request the unblocking of TikTok in the country.

In his appeal, Bekeshev pointed out that the blocking of the platform does not achieve the stated security goals; rather, it creates additional risks for citizens and the economy.

According to him, TikTok has implemented various tools for content moderation and user protection. In the case of specific violations, these tools allow for measures such as removing content or accounts instead of completely blocking access to the platform.

The deputy also noted that blocking TikTok does not solve the problem of harmful content, as similar materials can be found on other platforms such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

“The ban on using TikTok only contributes to the popularity of VPNs and other methods to bypass blocks. This creates additional threats to the informational and personal security of citizens, as many of these services are not reliable: users have no control over the processing of their data and may face traffic interception,” emphasized Bekeshev.

He also added that for many small entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals, TikTok is an important channel for promoting goods and services, as well as for connecting with customers.

“Restricting access to this platform reduces business opportunities, increases costs for attracting customers, and worsens conditions for competition, especially for microbusinesses and regional producers. TikTok also serves as a channel for disseminating information about Kyrgyzstan and promoting its tourism potential. Blocking the platform reduces the reach and effectiveness of such initiatives, including for small tourism projects,” the parliamentarian concluded.

Bekeshev urges the GKNB to reconsider the decision to block and to instruct the Ministry of Digital Development of the Kyrgyz Republic to restore access to TikTok.

It is worth noting that in May 2024, the TikTok platform was blocked in Kyrgyzstan based on a request from the GKNB. Unlike the USA and several European countries, where the blocking of the Chinese social network is justified by data security and privacy concerns, in Kyrgyzstan, the block was announced due to “harm to children's health.”
