Abdykalyk Akmatov has passed away - obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce a loss in Kyrgyz culture. On March 25, 2026, at the age of 71, the renowned theater and film actor Abdykalyk Akmatov, People's Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic, passed away after a prolonged illness.

According to information from the presidential administration, Abdykalyk Akmatov, born in 1955 in the village of Ak-Bulak in the Nookat district of the Osh region, was a member of the Union of Theater Workers and the Union of Cinematographers of the Kyrgyz Republic.

His career began in 1975 at the Osh Regional Drama Theater named after S. Ibraimov, where he worked as a lighting technician.

In 1978, Abdykalyk graduated from the acting faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, receiving a diploma as a film actor. Since then, he dedicated his life to the art of theater and cinema.

His filmography includes notable roles such as Toktogul Satylganov in "Kerbez," Koozhozhash's friend in "Descendant of the White Leopard," and Dooolos in the film "Our Paths Crossed."

On the stage of the Kyrgyz State Youth Theater named after B. Kydykeeva, he played the roles of the Kazakh director in "Talent and Fate," the mediator in "Boz Boydok," as well as A. Usunov in "Chingiz and Bubusara" and other performances.

At the Kyrgyz State Puppet Theater named after M. Jangaziev, he was remembered for his roles as Kerben and Vazir in "Naiman Ene," the Bear in "Faithful Friend," as well as the Deputy Minister in "I Also Want to Get Married" and other performances.

In the Kyrgyz National Academic Drama Theater named after T. Abdumomunov, he played many memorable roles, including Bakai in "Son of Manas Semetey," Omor in "Conscience Does Not Forgive," and Korkut in "Korkut Ata."

"A. Akmatov significantly contributed to the development of theater with his multifaceted talent, working in this field for many years. His mastery on stage and in cinema inspired future generations, and he was devoted to his profession. In recent years, he worked at the National Theater 'Manas' and actively participated in public life. He also became the recipient of numerous republican and international awards.

For his contributions to culture and art, A. Akmatov was awarded the Honorary Certificate of the Kyrgyz Republic.

He was honored with the titles of 'Honored Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic' and 'People's Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic.'

The memory of the outstanding actor Abdykalyk Akmatov, who dedicated his life to culture and art, lives on in the hearts of the Kyrgyz people, his fans, colleagues, and loved ones.
