Islam Makhachev, the UFC champion in two weight categories, shared his thoughts on the significance of his coaches — Khabib Nurmagomedov and Javier. In an interview for ESPN MMA, the Russian spoke about how his mentors deliberately limited his striking work, focusing on grappling and control on the ground.

According to Makhachev, "Javier and Khabib didn't allow me to work actively on my feet. Although I can fight any opponent, they always said: 'Take him to the ground, control the fight, don't complicate the situation.' This strategy, he admits, proved crucial for achieving 16 consecutive victories in the UFC.

Recent Title Defense

At UFC 322, which took place on November 16 in New York, Makhachev defended his title, winning against Australian Jack Della Maddalena by unanimous decision. The Russian noted that the advice from Khabib and Javier helped him maintain stability and effectiveness in all his fights, ensuring control over his opponent and minimizing potential risks.

Opinion on Khabib

Makhachev expressed great gratitude to Khabib for his contribution to his career: "Khabib always holds the microphone, and that's why the camera in the UFC is often directed at our corner. He has aged because of us. I really appreciate him, because although he has retired, he has fully dedicated himself to us."

The Russian emphasizes that the strategy of his coaches contributed to his success in two weight categories and the creation of a brilliant career in the UFC.

Thus, the mentorship of Khabib and Javier has been a fundamental factor in Makhachev's successes, including his recent title defense at UFC 322 and his impressive streak of 16 consecutive victories.
