On November 16, Russian fighter Islam Makhachev achieved a decisive victory over Australian Jack Della Maddalena, becoming the new UFC champion in the welterweight division (up to 77 kg). This fight was the culmination of UFC 322, and Makhachev became the first Russian athlete to win championships in two weight classes.

Fight Overview

Round 1.

The fight began with aggressive actions from Maddalena, who attempted to attack while standing, but Makhachev quickly adapted, confidently evading strikes and executing a takedown that brought the fight to the ground. Islam took a half-guard position, controlling his opponent, landing strikes, and attempting to transition to submission holds. The first five minutes went to Makhachev.

Round 2.

The second round started with Makhachev working with low kicks, to which Maddalena responded with jabs. Islam again brought the fight to a clinch against the cage and, having secured the top position on the ground, began to methodically land elbow strikes. This round also went to the Russian; during the break, Khabib Nurmagomedov noted that the fight was going according to plan.

Round 3.

In the third round, Makhachev continued to control the fight, slowing down his opponent with a series of powerful strikes, including an accurate low kick. Soon, Islam executed another double-leg takedown and secured the top position, alternating strikes to the body and head, which allowed him to control the pace of the fight.

Round 4.

By the start of the fourth round, both fighters had noticeably slowed down, but Makhachev appeared fresher. He again took his opponent to the ground and attempted to move to a crucifix and rear-naked choke. Maddalena defended himself, but Makhachev's control was unquestionable. In the closing minutes of the round, Islam spent time in back mount and a diagonal position.

Round 5.

From the first seconds of the fifth round, Makhachev once again took the Australian to the ground. He continued to attack, trying to secure a submission and choke, but Maddalena managed to defend himself. Nevertheless, Makhachev completely controlled the situation, landing strikes and not allowing his opponent to rise. With 10 seconds left in the fight, Islam smiled at Khabib in the corner, maintaining confidence until the very end.

The victory at UFC 322 allowed Islam Makhachev to forever etch his name in the history of the organization, becoming the first Russian to win championship titles in two weight classes.
