The focus of the research institutes of the Soviet Union and Kyrgyzstan was the study of archaeological monuments in the Fergana Valley, particularly the city of Osh. One of the initiators of the archaeological research was Professor Yuri Alexandrovich Zadneprovsky. He was born in 1924 in Gatchina, Leningrad Oblast. In 1950, he graduated from the historical faculty of Leningrad State University, and from 1954 he was a candidate of historical sciences, and from 1979 a doctor of historical sciences, senior researcher at the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He was the head of the Fergana expedition and a participant in the Great Patriotic War.
He was awarded orders and medals of the USSR. He published more than 170 works, of which 100 were on archaeology and ancient history of Kyrgyzstan. Yu. A. Zadneprovsky conducted 30 archaeological expeditions in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
He discovered and studied the main monuments of the ancient agricultural Chust culture of the late Bronze Age, and conducted excavations at the Osh settlement. He published monographs: "Archaeological Monuments of the Southern Regions of Osh Oblast," "Ancient Agricultural Culture of Fergana," and others.
In 1974, the Fergana archaeological expedition led by Yu. A. Zadneprovsky discovered more than 30 cultural monuments of the ancient population in the Osh region, particularly in the city of Osh. He claimed that Osh is older than Samarkand itself. In 1979, Yu. A. Zadneprovsky found rooms of a castle from the time of Alexander the Great. The ancient structure has a rectangular shape measuring 24 by 15 meters. Eleven rooms have been preserved.
The outer walls reach a thickness of two meters, which gives reason to believe that the ancient castle was a fortress. Yu. A. Zadneprovsky studied the archaeology of the Fergana Valley and the city of Osh for 25 years. He convincingly proved the ancient origin of the Osh settlement: nearly 3000 years. Unique excavations on the rocky outcrop of the "mountain of secrets" were monitored by scientists from many countries, and the summer of 1979 gifted archaeologists magnificent finds: remnants of an ancient dwelling, utensils—vessels, cooking pots—metal and stone tools.
If this was previously considered a utopia, it has now been practically proven, as evidenced by an entire museum of unique finds, many of which have been well preserved, conveying to our days the clarity of form, pattern, and intention of the unknown master. Yuri Alexandrovich Zadneprovsky defended his doctoral dissertation on early agricultural culture in the territory of the Fergana Valley. In particular, Osh, Southern Kyrgyzstan occupies a significant place in his research. Zadneprovsky presented an overview of long-term studies that allowed archaeologists to conclude: "Osh is a contemporary of Ancient Rome." The Bronze Age settlement discovered on the slopes of Suleiman Mountain is "subjective" proof of this. He asserted that the settlement in the territory of modern Osh arose 3000 years ago, thereby confirming the validity of the planned date for the city's anniversary celebration.
The Leningrad Archaeological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, under the leadership of Professor Yu. A. Zadneprovsky, as a result of archaeological research in the Fergana Valley, particularly in the city of Osh from 1976 to 1984, irrefutably proved that the city of Osh is 3000 years old.
